Volcanism in Myvatn

Volcanism in Iceland

A large and beauty volcanic landscape is the area around the lake Myvatn in the northern part of Iceland. Near by the lake are some worth seeing natural wonders. One of it is the explosion crater Hverfjall. This tuff ring is part of the Krafla volcanic system.

It was formed about 2500 years ago in huge steam explosions that were triggered as the hot magma encountered groundwater. The lava at Hverfjall has solidified glassy water vapor.
